Think of a time when you or someone you know used informal language in a situation where formal language may have been more appropriate. What happened? Looking back, what could have been said differently, and what did the situation teach you about choosing your words carefully?

Prompt Response: A time when someone I know used informal language in a situation where formal language would have been more appropriate is when my cousin put in a job application. He used a lot of slang in his application which I believe led him to not getting the job. Using formal language would have made him seem as more professional which is something crucial as a potential boss is going to see it and get an impression from it. His informal language might have gotten him eliminated quickly as a prospect. Instead, he could have used less slang and more formal language to improve his application. This situation shows how the use of informal language may shutdown opportunities.

Summary: In class, we took notes over formal and informal language and we analyzed other group’s argument paragraphs.

Reflection: We learned about how to use formal and informal language and the situations where each is appropriate. It’s important to know when to use each one as using formal language in appropriate situation can allow one to leave good impressions and open up opportunities. I can use this knowledge when doing assignments and when filling out job applications.
